Head Coach: Michael Maguire

Starting 13: Thompson, Fonua, Momirovski, Marsters, Jennings, Marshall, Brooks, Matulino, Farah, Twal, Matterson, Garner, Taylor – Interchanges: Packer, Mikaele, Aloiai, Chee-Kam – Reserves: Reynolds, Eisenhuth, Liddle, McQueen

Unavailable: Moses Mbye, David Nofoaluma, Chris Lawrence

  • Wests Tigers parted ways with head coach Ivan Cleary during the off-season and head into 2019 with Michael Maguire in charge with the New Zealand head coach combining his time between the two roles.

  • The Tigers added impressive Rabbitohs back Robert Jennings with Paul Momirovski and Ryan Matterson also arrived from the Roosters with Wests hoping to make the top 8 this season having fallen just short in 2018.

  • Moses Mbye and David Nofoaluma will both miss the start of the season along with Chris Lawrence who are all injured which means Corey Thompson starts at fullback and Mahe Fonua will take up a spot on the wing.

Head Coach: Des Hasler

Starting 13: Elliot, Taufua, Suli, Parker, Garrick, Elgey, Cherry-Evans, Fonua-Blake, Koroisau, Taupau, Thompson, Sironen, J. Trbojevic – Interchanges: Hodkinson, Gosiewski, Tanginoa, Sipley – Reserves: Funa, Cust, Perrett, Croker

Unavailable: Albert Hopoate, Taniela Paseka, Tom Trbojevic, Corey Waddell, Dylan Walker

  • Des Hasler will coach Manly again this year, seven years after his last spell with Trent Barrett finally put out of his misery as the Sea Eagles look to put last year’s disastrous season behind them.

  • The Sea Eagles don't appear to have a very strong squad on paper with Tom Trbojevic's fitness set to play a big part in where Manly finish but the fullback is out with a hamstring injury until Round 2 at the earliest.

  • Brendan Elliot will take Trbojevic’s place at fullback whilst Reuben Garrick lines up on the wing to make his debut with Kane Elgey also set to make his debut as Daly Cherry-Evans’ new partner in the halves.

Wests and Manly both have new men at the helm and will be hoping to put their coaching distractions behind them in Round 1. Neither side have significantly improved their squads from last year but the Tigers will hope Michael Maguire's arrival can improve their attacking play. They wasted lots of chances last year and struggled to score points but that will need to change this season if they want to make the play-offs and a win in this first fixture will help them set the tone for the year.
