Last meeting: Czech Republic 3-0 Sweden

  • Czech Republic could cause a couple of upsets at this year’s IIHF World Championship and will be hoping they can do better than just making the quarter-finals as they have done for the last three years.

  • The Czechs will attempt to roll back the years to when they were one of the dominant forces in ice hockey when they won four World Championships and an Olympic gold medal between 1996 and 2001 but their last medal of any kind came in 2012.

  • Czech Republic’s squad is currently hampered by numerous NHL players that they are unable to call upon but they do have some exciting talent in attack with Jakub Voracek their star man.

  • Sweden enter this competition with history beckoning as the two-time defending World Champions can make it three in a row, becoming the first nation to do so since their opponents in this opening game achieved the feat between 1999 and 2001.

  • The Swedes are well fancied to go close in their quest to make it three consecutive World Championship wins but it won’t be easy with Canada and Russia vying for the crown whilst the USA will also fancy their chances.

  • Sweden head coach Rikard Gronborg could be heading to the NHL after this tournament and will look to go out on a high with the 50-year-old looking to the attacking talent of youngster Elias Pettersson and Elias Lindholm to lead the way for his side.

Defending champions Sweden will be looking to make it three consecutive World Championship victories and will look to get off to the perfect start in this opening contest although it could be a tricky game with Czech Republic capable of causing them problems. The Swedes face off against the Czechs at a good time with their opponents missing a lot of NHL talent and can capitalise on their weakened squad to get the defence of their crown off to a strong start.
