  • World number one Novak Djokovic came through his first Madrid Open opponent Taylor Fritz with ease 6-4, 6-2 to set up a round of 16 tie with Jeremy Chardy.
  • The 31-year-old has had a middling 2019 so far by his standards, having of course won the Australian Open back in January but with several mid-tournament exits on the ATP tour.
  • Djokovic has won the Madrid Open twice before, in 2016 over Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal back in 2011.

  • Jeremy Chardy made light work of unorthodox Argentine Diego Schwartzman in the second round of the Madrid Open and now faces world number one Novak Djokovic in a difficult draw.
  • The Frenchman is now 11-11 for 2019 and ranked 47th in the world after a string of defeats to up-and-coming young talents such as Cristian Garin and Alejandro Davidovic Fokina.
  • 32-year-old Chardy has never quite reached top 20 standard which shows in his head-to-head record with Djokovic, who has won all 12 of their previous meetings.

Djokovic is going for a second career clean sweep and will see the Madrid Open as a warm-up for fast-incoming Roland Garros, knowing that the draw will see him meet King of Clay Rafael Nadal in the final should they both make it. Jeremy Chardy will likely offer little resistance, with a 12-0 deficit over the Serb let alone having actually never taken a set off the world number one. Djokovic can start planning for the quarters.
