  • Richard Gasquet made a return to action last week at the Madrid Open where he got past young talent Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the first round but lost to Roger Federer in the second.
  • Gasquet has had little success at the Rome Masters and lost to compatriot Benoit Paire at this stage last year as he faces another Frenchman in Jeremy Chardy here.
  • The 32-year-old has a strong record over Chardy, winning five of their six matches together including their only meeting on clay at last year’s Monte-Carlo Masters.

  • World number 42 Jeremy Chardy looked beaten from the off in his round of 16 tie with eventual Madrid Open champion Novak Djokovic, but showed some fight in the second set to show he could be on an upturn in form.
  • 32-year-old Chardy, the same age as his Rome first-round opponent Richard Gasquet, has not played in this tournament since 2016 where he was soundly beaten by Andy Murray in the round of 16.
  • Chardy has lost five of his six meetings with compatriot Gasquet, including last year’s Rosmalen Grass Court Championships final in the Netherlands.

Richard Gasquet has a 5-1 head-to-head record with Jeremy Chardy but it is hard to tell if he will be fresh off the back of just his first two matches this year or out of match practice. Chardy was well beaten by Novak Djokovic in as much as Gasquet was by Roger Federer, and so this match throws up a lot of unknowns. Perhaps then it is safest to assume that the match will not go to a deciding set, as this has happened just the once, last year in a Gasquet win in Stockholm.
