THE TEAM NEWS

JAMAICA

  • Jamaica will be hoping to go one better in the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup after they were runners-up in both 2015 and 2017 with the Reggae Boyz once again confident of upsetting the odds.
  • The Jamaicans have won three of their last five matches including a win in their only warm-up match against reigning champions USA that will stand them in good stead ahead of this tournament.
  • Darren Mattocks will be the key man up front whilst Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey enjoyed a fine season in the Bundesliga and will be looking to carry that form onto the international stage.

HONDURAS

  • Honduras have enjoyed some success in previous editions of the Gold Cup having made the semi-finals in three of the last five tournaments but have struggled in the last two and only managed to win one match in 2015 and 2017.
  • The Hondurans have gone four matches without a win and were hammered by Brazil in their final warm-up match as the Brazilians scored seven goals to severely hamper their preparations.
  • Anthony Lozano was very good for Girona last season and will need to be on top form for his country if they are to progress out of the group stages but their defence could struggle against pace.

THE PREDICTION

Jamaica have done well to defy the odds in the last two Gold Cups and will be looking to do so again as they attempt to go one better after they were runners-up in both 2015 and 2017. They begin their 2019 campaign with a tricky clash against Honduras but should be able to edge it. They play well as a team and are generally sound defensively with them posing a threat on the break too. That will be an issue for Honduras’ ageing defence with the Jamaicans able to take advantage to secure the win.
