  • Former junior Wimbledon champion Eugenie Bouchard comfortably came through her first round match with Peng Shuai 6-2 6-1 to set-up a difficult tie with seven-time champion Serena Williams.
  • Although still only 24, Bouchard has had to revive her career after nose-diving down to world number 193 last season, but she has come into form and went deep in her last two tournaments where she was beaten by Julia Goerges on both occasions.
  • The Canadian world number 79 is better than her rank after overcoming a difficult spell and has won eight of her last ten matches, but will need to beat Williams for the first time if she is to progress here.

  • World number 16 Serena Williams made quick work of her first-round opponent Tatjana Maria, winning in straight sets 6-0 6-2 with a first-serve win percentage of over 80%.
  • Williams’ world-ranking of course means very little when it comes to Grand Slams, and the seven-time Australian Open champion will have designs on her 24th singles title here.
  • The American has a 2-0 record versus her second-round opponent Bouchard, and although she hasn’t played a ranking event since her controversial US Open Final defeat to Naomi Osaka last summer, she won all three of her matches at the Hopman Cup on hard courts this year.

Betting against Serena Williams to do anything other than win everything is a fool’s game, as the most successful tennis player in history enters her 25th professional season in search of her 24th Grand Slam singles title. Her opponent Eugenie Bouchard promised much early on in her career, but there is evidence of a mental weakness to her game that stops her pushing past the elite players when it matters. Serena will one day no longer be favourite, but it will not be this year. WILLIAMS IN STRAIGHT SETS.
