Istomin's prospects at this year's Australian Open do not look bright as he is currently riding a four-match losing streak and faces the six-time winner and reigning champion.
The Russian is now ranked 99th in the world having once been as high as 33rd (2012) and all the signs indicate that his abilities are in decline at this stage of his career.
Istomin's best performance in Melbourne was reaching the fourth round two years ago but he has won just two matches in the seven Grand Slam tournaments that have taken place since then.
The reigning champion is again seen as one of the favourites for the title and it is difficult to argue with that given the way he has started the year. Federer won all four of his singles matches to help Switzerland retain the Hopman Cup and his serve wasn't broken at any point across those encounters.
There has been little sign that the 37-year-old's powers are on the slide and he will fully believe he has every chance of going all the way in Melbourne for the third straight year.
Federer has dominated Istomin in the past as he has won all six of their meetings, including a straight sets victory here in Melbourne back in 2006.
The reigning champion kicks off his campaign on Rod Laver Arena and it is likely to be a relatively comfortable passage to the second round. In previous meetings, Istomin has occasionally troubled the Swiss star but the end result has always been the same, and given that the Russian has no real form to speak of, we can expect a routine victory for Federer. Federer in straight sets.
