  • Nadal ran into an inspired opponent for the second match in a row and was put through his paces by Nikoloz Basilashvili before eventually coming through 6-3, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.
  • This is the world number one's first meeting with Thiem at the US Open but he has faced the Austrian three times at Grand Slam level (all at the French Open), winning in straight sets on each occasion.
  • He has however lost to Thiem on three occasions in the past and he will be all too aware of the weapons that his opponent possesses.

  • Thiem has endured some tough moments in New York so far, including a come-from-behind five-set victory over Steve Johnson in the second round, but he put on a more assured performance in the fourth round when he steamrollered the dangerous Kevin Anderson in straight sets.
  • The fact that Thiem has beaten the 'King of Clay' three times on the dirt will give him huge confidence that he has what it takes to win here in what will be their first meeting on a hard court.
  • Indeed, Thiem is one of only three men who have defeated Nadal in 2018, with that victory coming on the Spaniard's home soil in Madrid.

This will be the 11th meeting between these two players but all previous encounters have come on clay so it will be fascinating to see how their games match up on a different surface. Thiem certainly has the game to trouble the number one seed, as proven by his three career victories, and he is well capable of hitting the lines with regularity which will be the key to success for the Austrian.

However, the defending champion will have other ideas, and Roger Federer's surprise exit yesterday will have given Nadal even more motivation to seek an 18th Grand Slam title and close the gap on his Swiss rival. It is likely to be another tough battle and it would not be a surprise if it goes the distance, but expect the number one seed to prevail.
