  • World number three Del Potro has looked in great form so far in New York, brushing aside the challenge of both Donald Young and Denis Kudla with straight-set victories over the American pair.
  • A former US Open champion, Del Potro knows what it takes to succeed at Flushing Meadows and there have so far been no signs of the injury problems that occasionally blight him. If this remains the same, he is certainly a contender for the title he won in 2009.
  • The Argentine has had the upper hand over Verdasco in the past having come out on top in four of their five career meetings so history points towards a Del Potro victory here.

  • Verdasco has had a tougher route to the third round having first dismissed the experienced Feliciano Lopez before prevailing in a tough four-set encounter with British hope Andy Murray.
  • Whilst he wasn't facing a fully-fit Murray on Wednesday, he will still take great confidence from that victory and it will stand him in good stead as he faces another top-level opponent here.
  • The Spaniard's game plan ordinarily is try and overpower his opponent but even he cannot match Del Potro in that department so we may see him using more subtlety in his game to keep the Argentine guessing.

Two big-hitters do battle on Arthur Ashe and there should be plenty of spectacular winners on show between two players who don't pull any punches. Due to his monstrous forehand, a common tactic used against Del Potro is to target his backhand but that is an area of his game that has improved significantly in recent years so Verdasco may need to mix things up regularly in order to destabilise his opponent.

Verdasco's Achilles' heel throughout his career has been his inconsistency during matches, but this was not the case against Murray with his level rarely dropping over the course of the match. If he can maintain this standard against Del Potro then he will give himself chances but the likelihood is that he will be overpowered, with the Argentine fancied to win in four sets.
