THE LOWDOWN

BENOIT PAIRE

  • Paire came through a tough first round encounter with qualifier Dennis Novak on Tuesday, eventually prevailing 7-6, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6.
  • The Frenchman has now reached the second round or better at the US Open for five consecutive years but he is up against it here as he faces an opponent he has never previously beaten.
  • Despite losing all six encounters with Federer, Paire will take heart from their most recent meeting in Halle earlier this year where he ran the Swiss great extremely close and even had two match points and he has spoken of how much confidence that has given him.

ROGER FEDERER

  • It was typically serene progress for Federer in the first round as he was never really troubled in a routine straight sets win over Yoshihito Nishioka.
  • The five-time winner considers the US Open a huge target this year, especially having come up short at Wimbledon, so he will be keen to deliver another excellent display here and send out a warning message to his rivals.
  • It will be different conditions this time around for Federer as he will play in the searing daytime heat in New York and that could play a part in how this match is played out.

THE STATISTICS

THE PREDICTION

These two met just a couple of months ago in Halle in a match which arguably Paire should have won considering he squandered two match points. Given that contest was played on grass - Federer's favoured surface - it has given Paire new-found belief when facing the Swiss maestro and it will be interesting to see how he approaches this second round.

Federer, though, seems as determined as ever to compete for the title and, although it would not be a huge shock to see Paire pick up a set here, that is likely to be as good as it gets for the Frenchman as Federer marches on at Flushing Meadows.
