  • Murray's first Grand Slam match for 14 months resulted in a come-from-behind four-set victory over James Duckworth in the first round - a match which showed that he still has a long way to go in his comeback after hip surgery.
  • The Scot's expectations coming into the US Open have been tempered to say the least but he admitted that he felt better than expected in Monday's match which will have given him a big boost.
  • Murray has dominated Verdasco in the past, winning 13 of their 14 career contests, and although he is not currently in peak physical condition, he has history on his side in this respect.

  • Verdasco made smooth progress by dispatching a potentially tricky first round opponent in veteran Feliciano Lopez with a straight-sets victory and will feel he has every chance of defeating a rusty Andy Murray.
  • Twice a quarter-finalist at Flushing Meadows, the Spaniard has generally come off second best when facing Murray but can boast a Grand Slam victory over the Scot - a five-set win at the 2009 Australian Open.
  • Verdasco will rely on his powerful forehand to cause Murray problems and that could be a key asset for him in sending his opponent scampering around the court.

After not playing Grand Slam tennis in over a year, Murray was understandably rusty in his first round win over James Duckworth but he will view every match as a bonus at the moment. The experienced Verdasco - impressive in his own first round match - is certainly a step up in class and the Spaniard will provide a sterner test of where Murray is on his comeback trail.

A fit and firing Murray would be expected to come through this encounter and although there were some positive signs in Monday's first round win, he is perhaps not at the level required to overcome an experienced operator like Verdasco. Murray will battle gamely and could nick a set or two, but Verdasco is fancied to prevail.
