Simon Whitlock 7-10 Peter Wright
Simon Whitlock has slipped down to seventh place in the table following a run of four matches without a win. He is one point outside the play-off places and three points above the elimination zone.
Although he lost 7-4 to Gary Anderson last Thursday evening, he produced his best performance since night one of the tournament, pushing Anderson all the way and finishing the encounter with a match average of 104.13.
Last weekend at the European Darts Open he won back-to-back matches for the first time in a month and reached the quarter-finals, where his run was ended by the eventual champion Michael van Gerwen.
Last Thursday in Glasgow, Peter Wright lost 7-1 for the third Premier League match in a row and he has plenty to do if he is to avoid elimination from the Premier League after night nine. He is currently in ninth place in the table and has a leg difference of -19.
During those three consecutive 7-1 defeats against Suljovic, Smith and Van Barneveld he has had a combined total of only 15 attempts at hitting a double.
Wright put aside his poor Premier League form last weekend at the European Darts Open when he progressed all the way to the final with a tournament average of over 100. He went on to lose in the final 8-7 to Michael van Gerwen despite having led 5-1.
It has been a few weeks without a Premier League victory for both of these two players with Whitlock not having won since night three and Wright not having won since night two. Wright in particular has really struggled over his last three Premier League matches, winning just three legs in total and playing well below his expected level.
There were plenty of positive signs of a return to form for Wright at the weekend however. He used a familiar set of darts and his performances across the weekend were very consistent. Whitlock played very well last Thursday and would have won plenty of matches playing to such a standard, but he just ran into Anderson at the wrong time and this match could be a case of him running into Wright at the wrong time.
Snakebite has the urgent need for points and if he sticks to the darts he used last weekend and performs to the same level he can get over the line in a match that could well go to a last leg decider.
