Peter Wright 12-7 Michael Smith
Peter Wright is five points outside the play-off places. He has just three matches left to play (including this match vs Smith) in the 2018 Premier League.
Last week in Rotterdam he defeated Michael van Gerwen on Wednesday and then came back from 5-2 down to earn a point against Rob Cross.
Wright’s play-off hopes evaporated when he suffered three consecutive 7-1 defeats during the middle of the campaign. Since losing 7-1 to Van Barneveld on night eight, he has been defeated in just one of his last six Premier League matches – that sole defeat was inflicted by Gary Anderson
It’s a big night for Michael Smith in his bid to make the play-offs. He faces matches against both Peter Wright and Michael van Gerwen this evening.
Smith is currently fourth in the league table, three points ahead of fifth-placed Daryl Gurney and just two points behind league leader Michael van Gerwen.
Last Thursday night in Rotterdam he bounced back from two consecutive defeats by trouncing Simon Whitlock 7-1. That was Smith’s second 7-1 win of the campaign, and he also has a 7-0 victory to his name. Only Michael van Gerwen has conceded fewer legs in the tournament.
Although Wright is out of the play-off picture he has shown over the last couple of weeks that he isn’t going out with a whimper as was shown in his dazzling win over Van Gerwen. Smith is well in contention to make the top four but defeats against Wright and Van Gerwen this evening could still leave him under some pressure over the next two weeks. Wright produced his worst performance of the season when he was defeated 7-1 by Michael Smith on night six and he will possibly have revenge on his mind.
The extra pressure on Smith as he strives to maintain his push for the play-offs might lead to some tension in the arm, and if Smith does make errors Wright is very capable of taking advantage.
