Michael van Gerwen 11-2 Daryl Gurney

  • Michael van Gerwen bounced back from his week two defeat to Peter Wright in emphatic style by averaging 110 in defeating Gary Anderson 7-3 last week in Newcastle. It was the 26th consecutive TV match in which Van Gerwen has averaged in excess of 100.
  • The 7-3 win over Anderson wasn’t perhaps as convincing as it seems, as Anderson had first attempt at a double in six of the ten legs and missed darts at doubles in five of the legs that Van Gerwen won.
  • Van Gerwen won 14 consecutive matches last weekend in capturing two PDC ranking titles. He has already won five tournaments in 2018 and overall in 2018 he has won 38 out of the 40 matches he has played.

  • Daryl Gurney let a 5-1 lead slip against Gerwyn Price last week and had to settle for a point in a 6-6 draw against the Welshman. It was the second match out of three where Gurney has let a potential win slide from his grasp; he led 6-3 in week one against Van Barneveld and went on to draw the match.
  • Missed darts at doubles have been very costly for Gurney across his three matches so far. No player has had more double attempts in the opening three weeks but his tournament checkout percentage is only 29.6%.
  • Gurney hit a total of six 180’s against Price last week and he currently sits at the top of the 180 stats table in the 2018 Premier League with 14 scored.

World number one Michael van Gerwen is sure to be highly motivated to make a big impact on the first Premier League night to be held in Germany in front of what will be a big crowd at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin. Van Gerwen comes into this fixture on the back of a very successful weekend where he won two tournaments, carrying on from the scintillating form he showed against Gary Anderson last Thursday.

Gurney has had a frustrating start to life in the Premier League; he should have two wins to his name but as a result of missing his chances he is still looking for his first victory and with matches against Peter Wright and Gary Anderson to follow in the next two weeks, he may start to further regret the missed chances from those earlier games.

Their previous meetings have been largely dominated by Van Gerwen, and even though Gurney has enjoyed a couple of wins, all of their previous four TV encounters have been won by the Dutchman. Gurney does have the scoring power to create chances against Van Gerwen but the heavy scoring will also bring out the best in Mighty Mike, so expect another high-calibre performance resulting in two points for the defending Premier League champion.
