Michael Smith 9-4 Gerwyn Price
Michael Smith was beaten 7-2 by Michael van Gerwen last Thursday in Glasgow despite winning the first two legs of the match. Smith only managed one to have one attempt at a double in total during the seven consecutive legs won by Van Gerwen,
He has now lost two of his last three Premier League matches; though those defeats were against the world number one Van Gerwen and current world champion Rob Cross.
Last weekend at the European Darts Open he suffered a 6-4 defeat in the last 16 against James Wade in spite of producing an impressive match average of 106.07.
Gerwyn Price has lost each of his last four Premier League matches and is still rooted to the foot of the league table as the only player yet to register a win in the tournament.
Last Thursday in Glasgow he suffered his heaviest defeat of the Premier League season when he was on the end of a 7-1 thumping by Rob Cross. Price had actually won the opening leg of the match against the throw and missed two darts to win the second leg before Cross hit top gear and surged away from the Welshman.
Price was defeated in his opening match by Richard North at the European Darts Open last weekend, and he has lost in each of his last six matches in all competitions.
Both of these players are coming into this match on the back of heavy defeats last time out in Glasgow. Last week’s loss is sure to have affected Gerwyn Price more though as it looks like his time in the 2018 Premier League is coming to an end. His confidence will have taken a further knock due to his early round defeat in the European Darts Open and Michael Smith has the opportunity to add further misery to the Iceman.
Smith knows he can focus on trying to achieve a top four finish and he has been good at taking his chances against struggling players so far in this tournament. Although Price has won the last two meetings between the pair, it is Smith who has the edge in their overall head-to-head record and he looks likely to chalk up a tenth victory against Price here in Belfast.
