Daryl Gurney 7-11 Peter Wright
Daryl Gurney lost 7-2 to Michael van Gerwen last week; he is one of only two players without a win in the opening four weeks of the 2018 Premier League. Including this match against Wright, Gurney still has to face three of the current top four players in the PDC rankings.
Gurney’s checkout percentage against Van Gerwen was 22.2%, and he has the lowest overall checkout percentage in the tournament at 28.6%. He is also the only player yet to register a ton plus finish.
As poor as his finishing has been, Gurney has been scoring well. During the first four weeks Gurney has hit a total of 17 180’s, with only Gary Anderson equalling that total.
Peter Wright sits in fourth place in the table with four points from his opening four matches. Last week he saw a potential win against Gary Anderson snatched from his grasp when he lost the final three legs of the match having earlier led 6-3.
His average of 104.65 against Anderson was his highest of the Premier League season so far. Wright has now averaged over 100 in each of his last three Premier League matches and his match average has improved each week during the season.
Wright’s checkout percentage has been an impressive 47% over the last three weeks combined - a huge improvement on the 28.6% he managed during week one.
Gurney and Wright certainly aren’t strangers having met 11 times since the start of 2017, and overall, they have faced off 18 times previously. Wright has the better overall record in their head-to-head meetings, but recent matches have gone the way of the Northern Irishman with Gurney winning each of their last four encounters. Wright has been performing better than Gurney in the Premier League this season, especially on their checkouts with Wright amongst the most clinical finishers, whereas Gurney has really struggled to take his chances as is shown in his statistics.
Wright is tipped to come out on top in this match; he is carrying a bit more confidence than Gurney and his past Premier League experience also goes in his favour. Gurney is sure to be feeling a little more pressure due to his position in the table and this will hamper his chances of making it five wins in a row against Snakebite.
