Sydney Roosters suffered a shock defeat in their opening game of the season as they went down to a 10-8 loss against Wests Tigers. Corey Thompson’s 77th minute try was converted off the touchline by Tuimoala Lolohea to condemn the Roosters to defeat.
Trent Robinson is able to recall Luke Keary to his side after a broken jaw. However, he must still pass a late fitness test in order to take his place in the side with Mitch Cornish once again on standby to replace him if he doesn’t make it.
Blake Ferguson made more metres than any other player in the league in the opening round, amassing 269 metres. He also made a league-high three linebreaks with the Roosters needing to finish their sets in better fashion to make the most of opportunities like that.
Canterbury put up a valiant fight but just couldn’t take control against reigning Premiers Melbourne last week as they went down 18-36 in their season-opener on neutral soil in Perth.
Dean Pay has named the same 17 that were defeated last week although it is expected there will be a change after Greg Eastwood was named to play for the Bulldogs’ reserve grade with Renouf Toomaga the likely replacement.
Canterbury matched Melbourne in a lot of areas last week but the Storm proved to be too good in the end. One thing the Bulldogs will need to improve on this week is their discipline, after they were on the wrong side of a 9-4 penalty count last week.
Having begun the season with a loss, the much-fancied Sydney Roosters will be looking for their first win of the year as they host Canterbury Bulldogs this week. The Roosters thought they had the two points until the late drama against Wests whilst the Bulldogs fell short of the high standard set by Melbourne. The Bulldogs did show some glimpses of what they could achieve this season but the Roosters should have too much here as they get their home campaign underway.
