THE TEAM NEWS

MELBOURNE RENEGADES

Coach: Andrew McDonald

Captain: Tom Cooper

  • The Renegades were able to reach the semi-finals for just the second time in Big Bash history last season and they will be looking to progress even further this time around but much will depend on whether their new signings can produce more than those they have replaced.

  • Veterans Brad Hodge and Brad Hogg have not been resigned while Matt Short (Strikers), Dwayne Bravo (Stars) and James Pattinson (Heat) have all been allowed to join other teams as the Renegades will have a new younger look about them this season.

  • Cameron Boyce and Dan Christian are two strong signings with plenty of experience but they will hope talented young English bowler Harry Gurney can become a revelation along with Pakistani Usman Khan Shinwari and Will Sutherland, and they will need the new men to hit the ground running as they are without Aaron Finch and Marcus Harris who are with the Australian Test team right now.

PERTH SCORCHERS

Coach: Adam Voges

Captain: Mitchell Marsh

  • The Scorchers retained their proud status of being the only team in BBL history to have made the semi-finals in every edition of the tournament so far last year but they too will be hoping to do better than the semi-finals this year once again.

  • Adam Voges has retired and will coach the team this year while they will be without star paceman Mitch Johnson who has also retired but those are the only two changes from last season with no new faces and in truth the loss of Johnson may seem bigger than it actually is given he missed several games last year.

  • The squad remains one of the strongest in the tournament with T20 specialist Andrew Tye spearheading an outstanding bowling unit with the Marsh brothers, Michael Klinger, Ashton Agar providing plenty of quality with the bat which will only improve when Cameron Bancroft returns from his suspension for their next road trip.

THE PREDICTION

The second match in BBL08 promises to be another cracker between two outfits that both reached the semi-finals last season only to fall narrowly short. The Renegades have made more changes than most teams in the competition for this edition but they are hampered here without their two Test players in Finch and Harris. The Scorchers on the other hand have a very tried and trusted look about them and that should work in their favour for this opening match. All their key men are available and with their elite bowling unit looking strong yet again, they can take advantage of an under-strength Renegades line-up to win their opening match.
