PERTH SCORCHERS

Coach: Justin Langer

Captain: Adam Voges

  • The Scorchers defied the bookmakers in the opening game to defeat the Sydney Sixers thanks to an excellent knock by Ashton Turner who hit 52 off 27 balls, and they will have to produce an even better performance against the Stars.
  • In support of the Klinger family and the recent news of Michael Klinger’s wife being diagnosed with cancer, the club have encouraged players, fans and all attendees to wear a touch of pink for this game to show support to the friends and families impacted by the disease.
  • They will once again be without their host of Australian internationals for this game while Klinger is not expected to be available for this match neither so they will be relying on their lesser known players and their tremendous bowling attack to make the difference here.

MELBOURNE STARS

Coach: Stephen Fleming

Captain: John Hastings

  • The Stars made their traditional slow start to the competition as they lost to the Brisbane Heat in Round 1 by 15 runs when plenty of their high profile batsmen failed to deliver so they will have to improve notably against the impressive Scorchers’ bowling attack.
  • Marcus Stoinis was the standout performer in the opening match with bat and ball as he hit a BBL07 high score of 99 and took three wickets, but they will require some of their other key men like Ben Dunk, Luke Wright, James Faulkner and Glenn Maxwell to raise their games.
  • They will however be without star batsman Kevin Pietersen who has flown home to spend Christmas with his family so he will not be available for this clash against their fierce rivals.

PREDICTION
Plenty at stake for this clash between two teams that have forged a fierce rivalry in previous Big Bash editions. The Stars know they cannot afford to lose another game even at this early stage of the competition but that will mean their batsmen have to get the better of the Scorchers’ bowling attack which is the best in the competition. Matches between these two teams have largely been low scoring and that should be the case once again, but the urgency and experience of the Stars should just about give them the edge.
