Last five meetings: Perth Scorchers W5, Hobart Hurricanes W0
All-time meetings: Perth Scorchers W6, Hobart Hurricanes W2
Coach: Justin Langer
Captain: Adam Voges
The Scorchers go into the final four as favourites to win the competition after sealing home advantage in the semis and the final by finishing top of the group and they will play their first match in their brand new Optus Stadium here.
There is a chance that the Scorchers go with an all pace bowling attack here as Ashton Agar is unavailable after being called up by Australia, while Ashton Turner’s shoulder injury is preventing him from bowling so Mitchell Marsh, Jhye Richardson, Mitchell Johnson, Tim Bresnan and Matthew Kelly may form their bowling strikeforce.
Despite losing Ashton Agar, they are expected to welcome back Mitchell and Shaun Marsh after international duty and injury respectively so that gives them a huge timely boost for the remainder of this tournament.
Coach: Gary Kirsten
Captain: George Bailey
The Hurricanes scraped into the final four despite losing their last three matches so they come into this match in poor form with low confidence which is not helped by the fact that the Scorchers beat them twice in the groups.
The success of the Hurricanes and star batsman D’Arcy Short has proved costly to them as his call-up to the Australian T20 side sees him ruled out of this semi-final and his absence is a huge loss to them following his 504 runs in the 10 group matches.
They can count upon Tim Paine which is a boost for them but they will notice the absence of Short significantly for his batting and part-time bowling, while coach Gary Kirsten contemplates whether to drop Tymal Mills who went for 56 in the last group match and has conceded 389 runs in his 40 overs bowled at an economy rate of 9.72.
The semi-finals kick off with the Scorchers making their debut in the brand new Optus Stadium which was opened with the fifth ODI between Australia and England. That game saw plenty in it for both bowlers and batsmen and the Scorchers are delighted with how it looked based on that game which should favour their bowlers. They should have the Marsh brothers back in their team which strengthens them, but the Hurricanes are hit by the loss of D’Arcy Short who has been a revelation for them in BBL07. Their poor form and that team news combined will make this a tough task for them and the Scorchers should make yet another Big Bash final.
