Last five meetings: Melbourne Stars W3, Hobart Hurricanes W2
All-time meetings: Melbourne Stars W5, Hobart Hurricanes W2
Coach: Stephen Fleming
Captain: John Hastings
The Stars' dismal season continues to peter out as they sit firmly rooted to the bottom of the BBL07 ladder with just one solitary win in their nine matches so far and they have been beaten relatively comfortably in most of those matches.
Kevin Pietersen missed the defeat to the Sixers due to soreness in his back but he should return here for his final game with the Stars and he will be desperate to depart on a high note as will Rob Quiney who is also departing.
They have to do without star man Glenn Maxwell though who has been called up to the Australian ODI squad which is a major blow to them considering he has been their top runscorer in four of their last seven Big Bash matches
Coach: Gary Kirsten
Captain: George Bailey
The Hurricanes come into this final match of the group stage knowing a victory against the bottom club will see them guarantee third place and that is the simplest of routes to secure a final four spot rather than lose and await the outcome of the second match.
They have been able to name an unchanged squad for this game but they will likely make at least one change to the starting eleven as they can count upon Alex Doolan for this match after he recovered from concussion so they will have to decide who he replaces whether that is Christian, Milenko or Rogers.
The Hurricanes have lost their last two matches albeit narrowly so they will be looking to regain the form that saw them win five matches in a row in the middle of BBL07 and not leave their semi-final spot down to chance and what happens in the second match on Saturday.
This season has been a shocker by the Stars’ lofty standards and after failing to turn it around earlier in BBL07, they have virtually given up on it now. Their players are struggling for motivation other than the younger talents that have come in, and their bowling attack is arguably the worst in the competition. That does not bode well when facing a strong batting line-up like the Hurricanes’ and they should comfortably win this match and seal their semi-final place.
