What was the outcome in the last meeting? Carolina Panthers 23-16 Atlanta Falcons

  • Atlanta Falcons found another way to lose a game they had won when RB Todd Gurley inadvertently scored a TD with just over a minute of the game with Detroit Lions which gave their opponents time to go up the other end and score with two seconds remaining.
  • Gurley tried to go down at the 1yd line to set up for a match-winning field goal but ended up breaking the plane and the Lions made the Falcons pay for that error as they were able to score a TD, with the PAT securing a one-point victory for the road team.
  • In their bid to improve on their poor 1-6 record, the Falcons will be sweating on the fitness of some important players on this short week, namely WR Julio Jones who was limited in the first two practices of the week with a hip injury.

  • Carolina Panthers suffered a second straight loss as they fell to 3-4 thanks to a narrow loss to New Orleans Saints but it was another contest that they could have won with the Saints standing firm in the closing stages of the final quarter with the game in the balance.
  • New Orleans edged ahead with just under eight minutes remaining but Carolina were unable to do what was required to take the lead or even tie the matchup with that loss meaning they sit third in the NFC South.
  • The Panthers could be handed a tremendous boost with RB Christian McCaffrey making a welcome return to practice this week and he has been designated to return from the reserve/injured list.

Carolina Panthers will perhaps feel hard done by to be sitting at 3-4 this season but they are still well-placed to make a challenge for the post-season. Their hopes could be handed a significant shot in the arm as they take on Atlanta Falcons with star RB Christian McCaffrey potentially back on the field. He could make his first appearance since suffering a high ankle sprain in Week 2 but any decision will not be made until nearer to kick-off. The Falcons sit at 1-6 after another gut-wrenching defeat last week and with or without McCaffrey, the Panthers should be able to win regardless.
