What was the outcome in the last meeting? New Orleans Saints 41-23 San Francisco 49ers

  • San Francisco suffered late heartbreak in their highly anticipated game with Baltimore but the 49ers showed plenty of good signs in defeat and there is little doubt that they will be in the mix for the Super Bowl come the end of the season.
  • The 49ers continue to nurse plenty of knocks and safety Jaquiski Tartt and defensive tackle D.J. Jones were the latest to pick up injuries last week and they are both questionable to feature this week with Jones deemed day-to-day despite a limited practice on Wednesday.
  • Tartt had to sit out with his rib problem but there should be good news on the injury front for the 49ers with running back Matt Breida expected to make his return this week and boost the options out of the backfield.

  • New Orleans struggled in the red zone but the kicking of Will Lutz proved decisive as they overcame a tough Atlanta team to improve to 10-2 and put themselves in a strong position to secure a top-two seed in the NFC.
  • The Saints were able to get cornerback Marshon Lattimore back on the field in Week 13 and will hope he suffered no ill-effects from that game and, having avoided the injury report at the start of the week, he looks to have done just that.
  • Although that is a promising sign, the Saints do have a handful of injury concerns heading in to this week’s matchup with linebackers Kiko Alonso and A.J. Klein and tackle Andrus Peat all absent from Wednesday’s practice.

San Francisco highlighted their Super Bowl credentials despite losing out to Baltimore last week and their defense looks a match for anyone. They will face another tough examination this week as they face New Orleans in the Superdome but the Saints could come unstuck if their offense is not more fluent than in last week’s showing and that should open the door for the 49ers to bounce back to claim the win in this one.
