THE TEAM NEWS

AFGHANISTAN

Captain: Asghar Afghan

  • Afghanistan produced a stunning performance on Saturday to beat Ireland by 84 runs and seal this T20 series thanks in no small part to Hazratullah Zazai’s unbeaten 162 – the second highest ever T20 international score by a batsman – to smash 278/3 from their 20 overs.
  • Batting first gave them the freedom to smash a big score knowing that Nabi and Rashid Khan would likely cause the Irish issues having to chase a run rate of 13.9 per over from the start, and the toss will be key once again in this final match with whoever winning it likely to bat first.
  • The Afghans have experimented with their selections for the ODIs and Tests so they could consider changing things around now that the series is sealed, but they will also be keen to seal the whitewash so they could go unchanged again.

IRELAND

Captain: Paul Stirling

  • Ireland were outplayed by Afghanistan in the second T20 international so with the hosts having an unassailable 2-0 lead in this three-match series, Ireland have nothing but pride to play for but they will still be keen to get a positive result with the ODIs coming up.
  • Skipper Paul Stirling enjoyed the conditions and hit 91 from 50 balls, and he will be key for them here once again although the coin toss will be as important as anything as they will be desperate to bat first like the first match and then put the Afghans under pressure ideally.
  • Tucker came into the side for the injured Thompson in the second match and he could only muster two before succumbing to Rashid Khan as one of his four victims, and they will have to improve with the bat as well as the ball if they are to challenge Afghanistan who are getting into their stride with each game.

THE PREDICTION

Afghanistan blew the Irish away in the second T20 international on Saturday smashing all kinds of records on the way to an 84-run win. It is hard to see how Ireland can respond with this third T20 match – albeit a dead rubber – coming just one day later at the same venue. Batting first would give them a better chance to apply some pressure but they would have to post at least 180+ to give themselves a chance of defending and hope that complacency creeps in for Afghanistan. With this series being followed by the ODIs and Tests, it seems unlikely the Afghans will ease up so expect another comfortable win for them here.
