THE LOWDOWN

HEAD-TO-HEAD
All-time meetings:
Steve Lennon 0-3 Peter Wright
Previous meeting: Peter Wright beat Steve Lennon 6-5

STEVE LENNON

  • Irishman Steve Lennon was chosen as one of the nine players to fill in for Gary Anderson in the tournament, and he takes to the Premier League stage for the first time in front of a large Dublin crowd who are sure to give him plenty of support.
  • Lennon has risen up the PDC rankings over the past couple of years and is ranked just outside the top 32. He hasn’t had too many notable results on the big stage as yet, with his best performance in a TV tournament being a run to the quarter-finals at the Players Championship Finals in November 2018.
  • Back in May 2018 he did notably reach the final at a Euro Tour event but since then he has only made two quarter-final appearances on the tour.

PETER WRIGHT

  • Peter Wright has drawn 6-6 in both of his opening two matches of the 2019 Premier League. Last week in Glasgow he trailed Michael Smith 5-2 and was grateful to see his opponent miss seven darts at double during the next couple of legs. Wright eventually went on to lead 6-5 only for Smith to win the final leg of the match.
  • His average against Smith was a lowly 88.95, and overall only Raymond van Barneveld has a lower tournament average than Wright’s 94.97 after two matches played.
  • Last weekend on the regular tour he reached the quarter-finals at Players Championship 3 on Saturday before losing to Chris Dobey. On Sunday he exited in the first round to Scott Baker.

THE PREDICTION

Peter Wright’s opening two matches of the tournament have seen him start very slowly and although he has recovered on both occasions he will certainly need to start playing well from the off if he is to make a push for a return to the play-offs. The task for Wright in this match is certainly much easier on paper than it would have been if Gary Anderson was fit and competing in the tournament, as Lennon is potentially one of the weaker opponents filling in for the Flying Scotsman and Wright has to take advantage. Lennon’s time might come in the future but it is difficult to see him overturning the odds in this match and stopping Wright from taking the two points.
