THE LOWDOWN

ITALY

  • Italy fought back to 33-20 from 33-3 to seriously rattle the resolve of their opponents Scotland, and took the lead through a Tommaso Allan penalty to start and end the game strongly.
  • Three tries in the last ten minutes, from Palazzani, Padovani and Esposito, were as much about Scotland switching off as they were about Italy’s new attacking threats, but it will give them some confidence coming into this.
  • Italy and Wales have played each other in competitive test matches 26 times since 1994, with Wales winning 23 of those. Their last match in Rome ended 33-7.

WALES

  • Wales were 16-0 down at half time in Paris after a comedy of errors and some fantastic French play, but they fought back to claim a heroic 24-19 victory.
  • Coach Warren Gatland is managing Wales for his last Six Nations and said he believed Wales would go on to win the championship if they beat France, but crucially they could not achieve a bonus point unlike England and Scotland.
  • Gatland picked fly-half Gareth Anscombe over Dan Biggar and scrum-half Tomos Williams over Gareth Davies, and he is likely to do so again against the weakest team in the tournament.

THE PREDICTION

Italy’s flashes of offensive potency against Scotland were promising for a young team, probably the best Italian side for years, but they are still a league behind their competition in the Six Nations. Wales have found Rome a happy hunting ground in the past, winning 33-7 in 2017 and 61-20 in 2015. They should get a comprehensive win here, with a bonus point to boot.
