THE LOWDOWN

ENGLAND

  • England lost their first match of the Six Nations campaign, and with it the chance at a Grand Slam, against a passionate Wales side in Cardiff 21-13.
  • England led 10-3 at half-time thanks to 20-year-old Tom Curry, who put in another stellar performance, but the home crowd spurred their team on to find two tries in the last quarter.
  • Eddie Jones has called-up Bath lock Charlie Ewels as replacement for Courtney Lawes, who joined Mako Vunipola, Maro Itoje and Chris Ashton on the side-lines after a tournament-ending calf injury.

ITALY

  • Italy eventually lost 26-12 to a stuttering Ireland at the Stadio Olimpico, but they put in a stellar first-half performance to give the fans hope of a first Six Nations victory since 2015.
  • Tries from Edoardo Padovani and Luca Morisi put the Italians into a surprise half-time lead of 16-12 and Conor O’Shea’s young side are looking better all the time despite still being some way off the other teams.
  • O’Shea brought in Tito Tebaldi, Andrea Lovotti, Dean Budd, Jim Tuivaiti and Maxime Mbanda to good effect against Ireland and they could keep their spots, while moving Steyn to No.8 saw veteran Sergio Parisse dropped from the squad altogether.

THE PREDICTION

England’s defeat in Wales was a huge blow, but could be the elixir needed to push on for the Six Nations title. Eddie Jones will go for maximum points at Twickenham, with both bonus points and points difference looking vital at the close of the competition. Italy will offer little to change the narrative of the day and could lose by as much as 40 in the penultimate round of fixtures.
