THE LOWDOWN

JONNY CLAYTON

  • Clayton comes into what will be his third PDC World Darts Championship in good form having reached the quarter-finals at both the Grand Slam of Darts and the Players Championship Finals in recent months.
  • The Welshman won his first European Tour event this year when he beat compatriot Gerwyn Price 8-5 in the final of the Austrian Darts Open in April.
  • Clayton has claimed notable wins over Michael van Gerwen and Michael Smith lately so he will feel good about his chances of reaching the third round at Alexandra Palace for the first time in his career.

DIMITRI VAN DEN BERGH

  • Van den Bergh made light work of USA's Chuck Puleo in the first round but in truth he never really needed to get out of second gear in his 3-0 win so it is difficult to read too much into that performance.
  • The Belgian successfully defended his PDC Youth World Championship recently and also reached the final of the German Darts Masters earlier this year so he is fast becoming a household name in darts.
  • Van Den Bergh will have fond memories of last year's worlds where he reached quarter-finals before losing narrowly to eventual winner Rob Cross so he has the experience of going deep here.

THE PREDICTION

This is an extremely tight match to call as both players are capable of a very high level. Clayton has been consistent lately in reaching the latter stages of big events while Van den Bergh recently won the PDC World Youth Championship for the second year running. This really is a toss of a coin, but if we had to pick a winner, we'd just edge the young Belgian on account of his performances at Alexandra Palace last year.
