THE LOWDOWN

GERWYN PRICE

  • Despite losing early on in the Players Championship Finals most recently, Price should still be carrying confidence from his sensational Grand Slam of Darts success and he represents a formidable opponent for any player right now.
  • The Welshman was a first round loser in his first three attempts at Alexandra Palace but last year reached the last 16 before running into Michael van Gerwen.
  • The former rugby player is renowned for his intensity and aggressiveness on stage which occasionally gets under the skin of his opponents and it is likely we will see more of the same as he gets his campaign underway.

NATHAN ASPINALL

  • Aspinall brushed aside the challenge of Geert Nentjes in the first round in a comfortable 3-0 scoreline on his Alexandra Palace debut but in truth it was a match largely lacking in quality.
  • The Englishman picked up his first main tour title this year when he claimed a Players Championship trophy in September and that will have given him belief that he can compete with the top players.
  • The former World Youth Championship runner-up has lost to Price on all three occasions that they have met so he knows the size of the task facing him in this second round encounter.

THE PREDICTION

Aspinall got the job done on his PDC World Darts Championship debut on Wednesday but he only averaged 88.42 and that level of performance will simply not be enough to trouble world number six Price, who has now established himself as one of the top players in the world and a danger in any event.

Price's biggest obstacle here will be dealing with the greater level of expectation on his shoulders following his Grand Slam of Darts win, but his class should shine through as he aims to put down an early marker.
