THE LOWDOWN

MARK SELBY

  • Three-time champion Selby was in excellent form as he knocked in three centuries during his 6-2 win over Stephen Maguire and he will be determined to continue in that vain of form having not been past the quarter-final stage at the Masters since the 2013-14 season.
  • The head-to-head score between the two players is incredibly close with Selby edging it 13-11 overall and he has notably won three of their last four meetings, including a recent 3-1 win in the Championship League.

JUDD TRUMP

  • Trump enjoyed a 6-2 win over young rival Kyren Wilson in the opening round and has been rewarded with a draw against the world number one, although he has shown in the past that he is perfectly capable of competing with the very best on his day.
  • The Masters title has eluded the Bristol potter in his career so far although he has reached the semi-final on three previous occasions. With his victory at the Northern Ireland Open in November showing that his game is in excellent shape though, he is definitely a strong contender this year.

THE PREDICTION

The Alexandra Palace crowd should be treated to a spectacle here as two heavyweights vie for a place in the semi-finals. Trump looks like he means business this year after his 'grudge match' win over Kyren Wilson, but Selby was even more impressive in his opener. So often lauded for his tactical game, the world number one's break building was exceptional against Maguire and if he can repeat that level of play, he is likely to edge a contest which could go right down to the wire.
