THE LOWDOWN

TAYLOR FRITZ

  • 21-year-old Taylor Fritz announced himself in Melbourne by outclassing fan-favourite Gael Monfils in the second-round to win by three sets to one.
  • The world number 50 is well thought of as a future top 10 player and had a couple of big scalps last year, beating the likes of Fernando Verdasco, Sam Querrey and Jack Sock to boast a 23-20 record for 2018.
  • The American has faced his Swiss third round foe once before in Stuttgart 2016 where he lost well to the 20-time Grand Slam champion in three sets, taking the second 7-5.

ROGER FEDERER

  • World number three Roger Federer was impressed by his opponent Dan Evans’ determination and style of play, saying it was like “playing myself” in reference to Evans’ sliced backhand, but still cruised through to the third round in three sets.
  • The current Australian Open champion is yet to drop a set in the tournament, and he did not drop one at all until last year’s final - a five-set encounter with Marin Cilic.
  • The Swiss still has all his weapons at the astounding age of 37, and only lost to opponents with a lower rank than Fritz’ twice last year. Notably neither of which were at Grand Slams, where Federer thrives.

THE PREDICTION

Attention must be paid to American Taylor Fritz, as the 21-year-old is clearly learning his game and climbing up the ranks with some impressive wins on tour. His win over Gael Monfils was nothing short of emphatic, and showed mental toughness in coming through two tie-breaks. However, Roger Federer is the pinnacle, and while he loses more outside of Slams than he used to, his winning focus has not allowed him to bow out in the third round of any since the Australian Open in 2015. FEDERER IN STRAIGHT SETS.
