THE STATISTICS

THE LOWDOWN

STEFANOS TSITSIPAS

  • World number 15 Stefanos Tsitsipas is in uncharted waters at the age of 20 and into the semi-finals of the Australian Open, the youngest man to do so since Andy Roddick in 2003.
  • His four-set defeat of Roberto Bautista Agut perhaps says more about his rising star than his shock win over Roger Federer, with the Greek losing focus in places but ultimately rallying and showing a mentality beyond his years.
  • Tsitsipas has been beaten by Nadal twice in his fledgling career: convincingly on the Spaniard’s home turf and preferred surface clay in Barcelona and on a hard court in Canada.

RAFAEL NADAL

  • World number two Rafael Nadal beat American youngster Frances Tiafoe in another blistering three sets to meet another rising star, and Roger Federer’s conqueror, Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-finals.
  • The Spaniard is looking for his second Australian Open title and looks good for the semi-finals having beaten his Greek opponent in two ATP finals last year.
  • Nadal’s prospects for the final rest on him getting past young Tsitsipas in as quick a fashion as he has the rest of his matches, with his likely opponent to be Novak Djokovic who has been given a rest by the retirement of Kei Nishikori in their quarter-final.

THE PREDICTION

The likeness in style to his idol and fourth-round foe Roger Federer may be Tsitsipas’ downfall here against Rafa Nadal who has an impressive win percentage (63%) over the Swiss. Nadal praised the incoming generation after beating Tiafoe, and said that Tsitsipas “has the chance to be one of the best” in the future. For now however, Nadal looks imperious. He is yet to drop a set and has recent form against the Greek youngster to suggest that a blockbuster final against his Wimbledon 2018 conqueror Novak Djokovic is in the offing. This could go down to the wire, but youth should fall to experience this late in a Slam. NADAL IN FIVE SETS.
