THE LOWDOWN

KAROLINA PLISKOVA

  • World number eight Karolina Pliskova fought back from 5-1 down in the deciding set to Serena Williams, albeit after the American rolled her ankle, to set up a semi-final tie with US Open champion Naomi Osaka.
  • The Czech seventh seed is unbeaten in her last ten matches, including her recent Brisbane title, and she has already bettered her best run at the Australian Open having reached the quarter-finals last year.
  • Pliskova leads the way in her head-to-head with Osaka with two wins to one, all three of which were on hard courts, with Pliskova’s victory back in 2017 due to an Osaka retirement.

NAOMI OSAKA

  • World number four Naomi Osaka has reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open for the first time after comfortably beating Swedish sixth seed Elina Svitolina 6-4 6-1.
  • The Japanese 2018 US Open champion misses out on a semi-final rematch with Serena Williams after their controversial final at Flushing Meadows thanks to Karolina Pliskova’s own US Open revenge.
  • Despite losing the first sets in two of her five matches at this tournament, Osaka’s resolve and aggression on the baseline often overpowers her opponents once she finds her rhythm, not unlike Williams.

THE PREDICTION

This battle between Serena Williams’ recent conquerors will be a baseline slog, with two incredibly fit and dogged athletes in Karolina Pliskova and Naomi Osaka both seeking their first Australian Open final. Osaka’s recent exploits at the US Open will make her the favourite here, especially with her relatively easy quarter-final ending before, and much sooner than, Pliskova’s ordeal with Williams. Despite being five years her junior, it can also be argued that Osaka has the mental edge over her Czech opponent having already won a Grand Slam, but the fitness of this match-up looks set to make it a lengthy affair. OSAKA IN THREE SETS.
