THE LOWDOWN

FRANCES TIAFOE

  • 21-year-old American Frances Tiafoe did fantastically well to beat Bulgarian 20th seed Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round in four sets to make it to his first quarter-final at a Grand Slam.
  • The world number 39 came into this Australian Open off the back of a poor run of games in which he won just four out of 16 but has won over the neutral fans with his play and personality.
  • Tiafoe has never faced his quarter-final opponent Rafael Nadal but has some impressive scalps to his name over the last year including Milos Raonic, Juan Martin del Potro and Nadal’s fourth round foe Tomas Berdych.

RAFAEL NADAL

  • World number two Rafael Nadal put in a blistering start to his fourth round match with Tomas Berdych, winning 12 out of 13 games played to secure the first two sets before a third and more closely-fought decider.
  • The Spaniard came into the contest as second seed despite not having played since his semi-final retirement against Juan Martin del Potro at the 2018 US Open.
  • Nadal’s match fitness on hard courts will be under scrutiny from the off against Tiafoe after he also retired from his quarter-final match at last year’s Australian Open.

THE PREDICTION

An upset could well be on the cards in this quarter-final clash between a next generation top 10 candidate in Frances Tiafoe and one of the greatest ever, Rafael Nadal. The young American is in the form of his life, and his star is rising just like fellow youngster Stefanos Tsitsipas, who beat Roger Federer in the fourth round. Nadal is of course the favourite, and will win if his body does not fail him, but his longevity in the future of the game may rely on him not appearing at hard court events altogether. He can win in five sets, but it may prove too much for his semi-final chances. NADAL IN FIVE SETS.
