THE LOWDOWN

RAFAEL NADAL

  • Nadal came through an enthralling five-set quarter final with Dominic Thiem in which he lost the first set 0-6 before rallying to clinch the match on a tie-break in the deciding set.
  • That is now three tough matches in a row for Nadal who, despite being one of the fittest players on tour, is bound to be feeling the physical effects of such exertion.
  • The defending champion meets Del Potro for the second year in a row at the US Open semi-finals and he will draw upon the experience of having won that match and also having defeated the Argentine at both the French Open and Wimbledon this year.

JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO

  • Del Potro has enjoyed a more comfortable route to the semi-finals although he did drop a set for the first time in his quarter-final against John Isner, recovering to win 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, 6-2.
  • Although Nadal has the edge when it comes to head-to-head meetings, all five of Del Potro's victories have come on hard courts where his flat forehands are at their most effective and he will look to utilise that weapon as much as possible.
  • The Argentine has also beaten Nadal at this stage of the US Open before - a commanding 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 victory on his way to the title in 2009.

THE STATISTICS

THE PREDICTION

The fact that Nadal is still in with a chance of defending his US Open crown is testament to his incredible fighting qualities as there have been several occasions where it looked like he might be bowing out of the competition. The big question now is how much is left in the tank of the 32-year-old's legs, especially after his mammoth quarter-final with Dominic Thiem.

Del Potro has made the most comfortable progress out of the four semi-finalists and that will serve him well going into this encounter. He has proven in the past that he can match Nadal on hard courts and assuming he can get his forehand firing, he can nick this one in four sets.
