THE LOWDOWN

RAFAEL NADAL

  • The world number one is fresh and raring to go as he faces his compatriot after skipping Cincinnati to ensure he is in the best possible condition to defend his US Open title.
  • Nadal has been in superb form all year having lost just three matches although he trails behind Novak Djokovic amongst several bookies when it comes to the outright winner at Flushing Meadows.
  • He has largely dominated Ferrer throughout their careers although the pair have not met in competition since the season-ending ATP Finals in 2015.

DAVID FERRER

  • In his final US Open, David Ferrer faces his good friend Nadal and whilst his abilities have waned over the last couple of years, he remains one of the most respected and hard-working players on tour.
  • The Spaniard's competitiveness and work ethic are his greatest traits and he will do everything in his power to cause Nadal problems despite the obvious mismatch in form and ability at this stage of their careers.
  • He will take heart from the fact that hard courts represent his best surface against Nadal, having won four of their nine meetings on the surface. He was also victorious in their only previous meeting at the US Open, a four-set victory way back in 2007.

THE STATISTICS

THE PREDICTION

Like many of the opponents he has faced regularly in his glittering career, Nadal has largely dominated this rivalry and with Ferrer's powers on the wane in his final US Open, this should be a routine win for the defending champion. You can be sure that Ferrer will keep giving 100% until the last ball is played and he will offer stern resistance at times, but Nadal's class and form will take him through, most likely in straight sets.
