THE LOWDOWN

JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO

  • Del Potro is through to his second major final and will look to repeat the performance that brought him the US Open title in 2009.
  • The Argentine benefitted from his semi-final opponent - Rafael Nadal - retiring injured from their semi-final but he was already two sets up by that point. Del Potro has only dropped one set on his path to the final - against John Isner in the quarter-final.
  • Although Del Potro's record against Djokovic isn't great, he has been playing some sensational tennis in the past fortnight and has every chance of success if he brings his A-game.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

  • Djokovic's revival to the top of the tennis world has continued in New York and he will now be seeking a 14th Grand Slam title which would put him third on the all-time list, tied with Pete Sampras.
  • The Serb put in a commanding performance in his semi-final with Kei Nishikori, overcoming his Japanese opponent in straight sets to reach his eighth final at Flushing Meadows.
  • The only obstacle for him so far has been the heat and humidity but with temperatures now dropping, that is less likely to be an issue in the final.

THE STATISTICS

THE PREDICTION

A blockbuster final awaits between two of the biggest names in tennis, with both Del Potro and Djokovic fully deserving of their place in the final. As is the case in most of his matches, fan-favourite Del Potro will have the majority of the crowd supporting him and he will use that as fuel for the fire, although Djokovic does seem to relish having the crowd against him and he could also use that to his own advantage.

Del Potro will need to go big in his approach, utilising his huge forehand as often as possible and if that is hitting its spots - which it has done frequently in the last two weeks - then its sheer power could be too much even for the formidable defence presented by Djokovic.

The bookies may be edging towards the Serb, but we're tipping Del Potro to claim his second Grand Slam title in a four or five-set victory.
