Simon Whitlock 5-30 Michael van Gerwen (1 draw)
Simon Whitlock defeated Gerwyn Price 7-3 last Thursday to end a five-match winless streak and move back into the play-off places. He is currently one point ahead of Gary Anderson who sits in fifth position.
The win for Whitlock against Price certainly wasn’t pretty with both players averaging in the 70’s for the majority of the game. Whitlock raised his game drastically in the last three legs; he took the game by the scuff of the neck with a 164 finish on the end of a 12-dart winning leg against the throw to go 5-3 ahead and he closed out the match with 13 and 14 dart winning legs.
Last Sunday he reached the semi-finals at a Players Championship tournament where his run was ended by Adrian Lewis. That was Whitlock’s first semi-final appearance since last October.
MICHAEL VAN GERWEN
Michael van Gerwen won 7-4 against Mensur Suljovic last week to consign the Austrian to elimination and extend his own Premier League match winning sequence to seven in a row.
Van Gerwen was in tremendous scoring form during his win over Suljovic, hitting an outstanding ten 180’s in the match. His match average of 106.30 was his second highest of the 2018 Premier League season.
That match average could have been even higher but for a total of 17 missed doubles during the contest. His 29% checkout percentage was his lowest during the campaign so far.
Michael van Gerwen is looking relentless in his bid to finish at the top of the table for the sixth consecutive year. He has won seven matches in a row and is playing at a much higher level of consistency than his rivals.
Simon Whitlock has worked his way into a good position in the league table and he knows any points picked up from this match would be a big bonus. The Aussie has had a very tough time against Van Gerwen, previously having won only one of their last 25 meetings and it is difficult to make a case for him improving that record on this occasion.
Van Gerwen is playing too well and is motivated enough to avoid a slip up here. Expect another win and another masterclass from the Dutch darting maestro.
