Daryl Gurney 2-13 Michael van Gerwen
Daryl Gurney bounced back from consecutive defeats against Rob Cross and Gary Anderson with a 7-1 win over Simon Whitlock in the last match of the evening last Thursday to keep alive his play-off hopes.
Gurney is three points outside the play-off places having also played one match more than fourth-placed Michael Smith.
His heaviest defeat in the Premier League season so far came against Van Gerwen on night four when he was comprehensively beaten 7-2 by the world number one.
MICHAEL VAN GERWEN
Michael van Gerwen suffered double disappointment in Rotterdam last week when he lost 7-5 to both Peter Wright and Raymond van Barneveld.
Despite back-to-back defeats, he still has the lead at the top of the Premier League table and could secure first place for a sixth successive season with wins over both Daryl Gurney and Michael Smith this evening.
Van Gerwen averaged 106.9 and 103.7 in the defeats against Wright and Van Barneveld, thus maintaining his sequence of having recorded an average above 100 in every Premier League match he has played in 2018.
Michael van Gerwen will be smarting after losing twice in his homeland last week and will be fired up to bounce back this evening. He didn’t play badly in either of those defeats so it’s not a case of his form dropping drastically and more a case of good timing from his opponents. Gurney has a tough task ahead of him if he is to pick up any points from this clash; he has a poor head-to-head record against Mighty Mike having only won two of their previous 15 encounters and has only won a total of six legs during his last three matches against the Dutchman.
It’s hard to see Gurney improving his record against Van Gerwen in this match so expect a win for the Green Machine.
