THE LOWDOWN

CASTLEFORD TIGERS

Head Coach: Daryl Powell

Squad: Clare, Clark, Cook, Eden, Egodo, Ellis, Holmes, Laulu-Togaga’e, Massey, McShane, Millington, Milner, Moors, Sene-Lefao, Shenton, Springer, Trueman, Watts, Webster

Unavailable: Luke Gale, Ben Roberts, Alex Foster, Mike McMeeken, Greg Minikin, Jy Hitchcox, Joe Wardle

  • Castleford suffered a heavy defeat away at Catalans last week. The Tigers were poor and couldn’t cope with the Dragons who ran in eight tries as they condemned Castleford to a 44-16 loss.

  • The Tigers make just one change to last week’s squad with Greg Eden returning from injury and replaces Kieran Gill in the squad.

  • Last week’s loss was Castleford’s first defeat in five Super League matches and they now face a side that they have only lost to once in the last 11 contests.

LEEDS RHINOS

Head Coach: James Lowes

Squad: T. Briscoe, Cuthbertson, Delaney, Dwyer, Ferres, Golding, Hall, Lilley, Moon, Mullally, Myler, Oledzki, Parcell, Singleton, Smith, Sutcliffe, Walker, Walters, Ward

Unavailable: Kallum Watkins, Jamie Jones-Buchanan, Nathaniel Peteru, Jimmy Keinhorst, Carl Ablett, Ash Handley, Mitch Garbutt

  • Leeds’ seventh loss in a row was the final straw in Brian McDermott’s reign at the Rhinos as he was sacked this week. Wigan demolished the Rhinos 46-8 which resulted in a change of direction for the reigning Champions.

  • Leeds legend Kevin Sinfield returns to the club as their Director of Rugby whilst James Lowes takes over as head coach.

  • Captain Stevie Ward makes a welcome return for Leeds as well as Brett Delaney and Anthony Mullally with Ash Handley and Mitch Garbutt dropping out of the 19 along with some of the younger members of the squad.

THE PREDICTION

This is an important game for both teams but the main storyline has been taken by the Rhinos’ decision to sack Brian McDermott and replace him with a new coaching setup that includes Kevin Sinfield as the club’s Director of Rugby. James Lowes takes charge of his first game looking to stop the rot against Castleford. The Tigers have dominated recent encounters with Leeds only winning one of the last 11 which was the Grand Final last season. The Rhinos will also need to stop a run of seven consecutive games with them now sitting outside of the top 8 in Super League and facing the prospect of the Middle 8s. Whilst the new coaching setup may give Leeds a boost, it’s hard to oppose Castleford in this one.
