THE STATISTICS

THE LOWDOWN

WARRIORS

Head Coach: Stephen Kearney

Starting 13: Tuivasa-Sheck, Fusitu’a, Beale, Kata, Maumalo, Green, Johnson, Gavet, Luke, Paasi, Papali’i, Blair, Mannering – Interchanges: Tevaga, Pulu, Afoa, Hiku – Reserves: Vuna, Lawton

Unavailable: Nathaniel Roache, Tevita Satae, Tohu Harris, Sam Lisone

  • New Zealand Warriors secured an important win over St George last week. The Warriors went into the break with a 0-18 lead and despite the Dragons beginning the second half with two tries in the first 10 minutes, the Kiwi side kept them out for the rest of the game to win 12-18.

  • Sam Lisone is suspended so is replaced on the bench by Peta Hiku. Adam Blair switches to the second row with Simon Mannering reverting to lock in the only other change.

  • After just one win from their previous five games before last week’s win, the victory was vital for the Warriors. That helped them remain four points clear of Wests Tigers in the race for the play-offs.

KNIGHTS

Head Coach: Nathan Brown

Starting 13: Ponga, Sio, Mata’utia, Denniss, Kenny-Dowall, Cogger, Pearce, Ese’ese, Levi, D. Saifiti, Fitzgibbon, Barnett, Guerra – Interchanges: Buhrer, Heighington, Saulo, Felise – Reserves: Meaney, Yates

Unavailable: Tautau Moga, Jacob Saifiti, Slade Griffin, Nathan Ross, Jacob Lillyman, Connor Watson

  • Newcastle’s late comeback just fell short against Wests Tigers last week. The Knights brought themselves to within a converted try of the Tigers with 15 minutes left but a late field goal as well as a penalty before the hooter saw the Knights fall 16-25.

  • Josh King has been left out in favour for debutant Pasami Saulo. Connor Watson is again out having been named to start in the last two games but not featuring.

  • The Knights have lost their last two having won the two games before that with their season petering out.

THE PREDICTION

New Zealand Warriors highlighted how inconsistent they can be with an impressive win over St George last week. That followed a terrible defeat against Gold Coast but the Warriors turned it around to put themselves back within two points of the top 4. They still sit in eighth and are the side most at risk at dropping out of the play-off spots but with games running out, they should have enough to get over the line. They now host a Newcastle side who have suffered back-to-back defeats with very little on the line for the Knights. They have shown plenty of improvement this season and will want to finish as high as possible but will fall short in New Zealand this week as the Warriors all but seal their spot in the top 8.
