THE STATISTICS

THE LOWDOWN

SEA EAGLES

Head Coach: Trent Barrett

Starting 13: T. Trbojevic, M. Wright, Walker, Kelly, Uate, Croker, Cherry-Evans, Fonua-Blake, Koroisau, Taupau, Thompson, Gosiewski, J. Trbojevic – Interchanges: Brown, Lane, Perrett, Paseka – Reserves: Winterstein, J. Wright, T. Wright, Sipley

Unavailable: Jorge Taufua, Curtis Sironen, Kelepi Tanginoa, Jackson Hastings, Brad Parker

  • Manly were hammered by Parramatta last week as the Eels claimed their first win of the season. After a turbulent week off the field, it was on it that will cause the most concern for Trent Barrett after his side lost 44-10.
  • Brad Parker is out with a knee injury so Matt Wright starts on the wing with Lewis Brown coming onto the bench.
  • Manly were poor across the park last week and completed just 16 of their 27 sets (59%). They also made just 826 metres whilst making 11 errors, with improvements needed across the board this week.

KNIGHTS

Head Coach: Nathan Brown

Starting 13: Ponga, Sio, S. Mata'utia, Ross, Kenny-Dowall, Watson, Cogger, Ese’ese, Griffin, D. Saifiti, Fitzgibbon, Guerra, Barnett – Interchanges: Buhrer, Heighington, Yates, J. Saifiti, – Reserves: Denniss, King, Lamb, Lillymans

Unavailable: Nick Meaney, Connor Watson, Tautau Moga, Mitchell Pearce

  • Newcastle claimed a dramatic win against Wests Tigers last week. Trailing by two points with just three minutes left, Shaun Kenny-Dowall jumped the highest to claim a kick to the corner and put his side ahead as they claimed a 20-22 win.
  • Newcastle have been rocked by the loss of halfback Mitchel Pearce for the majority of the season after he suffered a torn pec last week. Connor Watson has provided a timely boost for the Knights as he replaces Pearce in the side after recovering from a shoulder injury.
  • The Knights were evenly matched against the Tigers in last week’s contest but one key difference for Newcastle was how many tackle breaks they made. The Knights made 52 during the contest with the Tigers only managing 15.

THE PREDICTION

Manly’s season took a turn for the worse last week as they were embarrassed by the previously winless Eels. After a week of off-the-field controversies, Trent Barrett would have been hoping for a big performance from his side to put all of that behind them but instead was left trying to pick the bones out of one of his side’s worst performances in years. Newcastle on the other hand were late victors against the Tigers to claim their fourth win of the season. However, the loss of Mitchell Pearce to injury is huge and will take some getting over. This is a tough game to call with Manly again looking for a response but this Newcastle side can grind out a win.
