THE STATISTICS

THE LOWDOWN

TITANS

Head Coach: Garth Brennan

Starting 13: Brimson, Don, Hurrell, Lee, Sami, Elgey, Taylor, Wallace, Peats, James, Proctor, Hipgrave, Arrow – Interchanges: Rein, Fotuaika, Stockwell, Matthews – Reserves: Cartwright, Whitbread, Latu, Elliot

Unavailable: Kyle Flanagan, Max King, Dale Copley, Michael Gordon

  • Gold Coast fell just short against Melbourne last week with the Storm showing their nous in how to win tight games. The Titans took an eight-point lead into the break but were kept scoreless in the second half as the Storm managed to eek out an eight points to ten win.

  • Garth Brennan has named the same team as last week although he could still make some late changes from the reserves.

  • The Titans have been made to pay for ill-discipline this season with them conceding a joint league-high 213 penalties heading into the final game. Their average of 9.3 per game is 2.3 higher than the team with the lowest average (St George, 7.0).

COWBOYS

Head Coach: Paul Green

Starting 13: Hampton, Feldt, O’Neill, Linnett, Gela-Mosby, Martin, Thurston, Scott, Granville, McLean, Cooper, Hess, Taumalolo – Interchanges: Lowe, Asiata, Fensom, Bolton – Reserves: Molo, Clifford, Bowen, Wright

Unavailable: Josh Chudleigh, Michael Morgan, Sam Hoare

  • Johnathan Thurston was given the best possible send-off in Townsville last week as his Cowboys side were dominant winners against Parramatta. North Queensland ran in five tries in the first half to blow the Eels away with them earning a 44-6 victory.

  • Jake Clifford is surprisingly left out after a good display last week. He makes way for the returning Te Maire Martin who has recovered from a slight ankle injury whilst Shaun Fensom comes onto the bench in place of Francis Molo.

  • Because of how dominant last week’s win was for the Cowboys, they all but ensured they would avoid the wooden spoon after a tough year. Even if they were to lose this game, it would take a huge swing in points difference for the Eels to overcome them on the ladder.

THE PREDICTION

As with last week, the build-up to this game has all been about one man and rightly so. Johnathan Thurston will take to the field for the final time as a rugby league player against the Titans with the champion halfback looking to bow out on a high. The Cowboys haven’t been able to give the future immortal the send-off he deserves this year but were impressive in his final home match last week and they will want to do the same here. The Titans fought hard against the Storm last week but lacked the quality to see the game out. They will now face a side hell-bent on trying to earn the win for one of the greatest to ever play the game and the Cowboys can do just that with one final Thurston-inspired performance and victory.
