THE TEAM NEWS

KASHIMA ANTLERS

  • Kashima Antlers beat Mexican club Guadalajara on Saturday to move into the semi-finals and the opportunity to face the UEFA Champions League champions Real Madrid in Abu Dhabi.
  • The 3-2 win over Guadalajara had plenty of positives to it but they will be keen on starting quicker than they did in that game after going behind early on, and they will know that they simply have to defend better.

Predicted line-up (4-4-2): Kwoun; Uchida, Jung, Shoji, Yamamoto; Endo, Nagaki, Leo Silva, Leandro; Doi, Serginho

REAL MADRID

  • Other than the blip that was the 0-3 loss CSKA Moscow in the Champions League when they fielded a heavily rotated squad, Real Madrid’s form has been excellent in recent weeks since Solari took over so confidence is high.
  • They will likely field a relatively strong team although it would be no surprise if the likes of Vinicius Junior, Marco Asensio and Isco were to play this opening match, while Nacho and Casemiro are unlikely to feature due to injury.

Predicted line-up (4-4-2): Courtois; Dani Carvajal, Varane, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo; Modric, Llorente, Kroos; Lucas Vazquez, Benzema, Bale

THE PREDICTION

These two teams met two years ago in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup and Kashima Antlers took Real Madrid all the way to extra-time only to lose 4-2 as Cristiano Ronaldo scored two late goals. Real will take this competition seriously as they will want to add another trophy to their cabinet, but it would be no surprise if Kashima give them a scare or two throughout. Both teams will likely play an attacking style and the Japanese club can trouble this Madrid defence, but ultimately Real should get the win in a high scoring match.
