All-time meetings: Guyana Amazon Warriors W6, St Lucia Stars W3

THE TEAM NEWS

GUYANA AMAZON WARRIORS

Coach: Johan Botha

Captain: Shoaib Malik

  • The Amazon Warriors enjoyed an excellent opening match by comfortably dispatching the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots with Shimron Hetmyer smashing 79 from 45 balls to chase down Chris Gayle’s team’s total of 146/5.

  • Guyana are expected to be favoured at home with the pitch favouring the bowlers significantly, so they will look to take advantage of that especially against the Stars’ batting line-up that was bowled out for 95 in their first match.

  • Paceman Sohail Tanvir had a good first match taking 1/24 from his four overs but hit the headlines for making an obscene gesture at Aussie batsman Ben Cutting after bowling him out, and he has since been fined 15% of his match fees and warned of his future conduct.

ST LUCIA STARS

Coach: Brad Hodge

Captain: Kieron Pollard

  • The Stars opened the CPL with a horrific loss to the Trinbago Knight Riders as they lost by 100 runs after being bowled out for just 95 and that means they have now gone 12 CPL matches without a win dating back to 2016.

  • Their chase of the Knight Riders’ total of 195 was actually reasonable with 35 from 2.4 overs as Fletcher and Warner made a fast start but they proceeded to collapse to 53/6 and Pollard and Sammy were unable to provide much support in the middle order neither.

  • The reliance on Fletcher and Warner at the top of the order will be key throughout this tournament given the lack of depth and quality in their batting line-up while their bowling unit is decent but they will struggle if the batsmen cannot give them something to work with.

THE PREDICTION

Contrasting starts for these two teams as the Amazon Warriors looked impressive in all facets of the game while the Stars struggled badly albeit against the defending champions in the opening match. The Stars do not have many options to work with to change things around but they will stick with the team and hope Fletcher and Warner can produce some magic opening the innings. The Guyana outfit just look more complete all round and at home on a pitch they will be familiar with that is often low scoring, should favour them and see them pick up a second win.
