THE LOWDOWN

FRANCE

Head Coach: Jacques Brunel

  • France have had a troubling 2018, although they picked up an excellent win against England in the Six Nations earlier this year. Before last weekend, they were on a five-game losing run.
  • However, they snapped that losing run last weekend by beating Argentina 28-13 thanks in part to two tries from Teddy Thomas.

  • With the World Cup just around the corner, players will be looking to impress head coach Jacques Brunel so key players like Mathieu Bastareaud could be rested.

FIJI

Head Coach: John McKee

  • Although their energetic, fast-paced style of play has endeared them to rugby fans everywhere, Fiji haven’t really had the success to back that up. So far in the Autumn Internationals, they have lost three straight games against Italy, Ireland and Scotland.

  • Having said that, Fiji have won each of their last three games on French soil, beating the USA (2014) and Japan (2016) in Vannes before victory over Canada in Narbonne in 2017.

  • Newcastle Falcons’ Vereniki Goneva needs one more try to stand alone as Fiji’s all-time top try scorer. He is currently tied with Sanivalati Laulau on 20 tries.

THE PREDICTION

Although most rugby fans have a soft spot for Fiji, it is hard to see them getting anything from a trip to Paris to face France. France have been victorious in all nine previous encounters with Fiji and have won all six games at home against them, not conceding a first-half try in that time. It’ll be a monumental upset if the Pacific Islanders can get anything from this game.
