All-time meetings: Sydney Thunder W3, Adelaide Strikers W6, No result 1
Last meeting: Adelaide Strikers beat Sydney Thunder by 20 runs
THE TEAM NEWS
Coach: Shane Bond
Captain: Shane Watson
Sydney Thunder have only won one of their last five matches now and they need to reverse this poor form quickly as they have dropped down the ladder and they come up against a strong team in the Strikers who have form on their side.
Jos Buttler and Joe Root both depart for England duty and the former will be sorely missed following his outstanding start to BBL08 so Anton Devcich and Chris Jordan are the replacements and they will be hoping to carry their form from the Super Smash league in New Zealand where they have been playing for the Northern Knights.
The absence of Buttler means Jay Lenton comes into the squad as a replacement wicketkeeper but they will likely use Devcich’s spin also if one of the bowlers drops out to make way for the incoming trio.
Coach: Jason Gillespie
Captain: Colin Ingram
Adelaide Strikers have moved up the Big Bash ladder thanks to three wins in their last four matches and they will be confident coming into this match knowing they beat Sydney Thunder two weeks ago.
Billy Stanlake missed the last match but has since been released from the Australian ODI squad and comes back into the Strikers’ squad at the expense of Wes Agar and he will be keen to prove his worth after not being selected for the national team.
Rashid Khan flew back for his father’s funeral earlier this week but came back quickly to play the last game and he will be available once again as he is determined to play well in honour of his late father.
Contrasting form for these two teams as the Thunder are struggling while the Strikers are clicking into gear now in BBL08. They have been impacted more by international call-ups but Thunder will miss Buttler badly so they need Watson and Ferguson especially to raise their game now. The key Strikers players like Ingram and starting to find some form which is key in Carey’s absence and their bowling attack is incredibly strong that gives them the edge once again here.
