All-time meetings: Hobart Hurricanes W4, Melbourne Stars W6
Last meeting: Hobart Hurricanes beat Melbourne Stars by 59 runs
THE TEAM NEWS
Coach: Adam Griffith
Captain: Matthew Wade
Hobart Hurricanes head into their semi-final with Melbourne Stars as the favourites for the tournament having finished top of the BBL08 ladder and are rewarded with a home tie as they look to make that advantage count in order to qualify for the final.
Captain Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short have both been sensational with the bat this season and have each managed to score more runs than anyone else in a single BBL season with Wade managing 590 whilst Short has hit 602 so far.
The Hurricanes have relied on their batting more so than their bowling in the competition so far having posted some big totals thanks to the likes of Wade and Short but James Faulkner’s return will provide the bowling unit with a much needed boost here.
Coach: Stephen Fleming
Captain: Glenn Maxwell
Melbourne Stars managed to secure a place in the semi-finals with a comprehensive victory over Sydney Sixers in their final game as they finished in fourth spot on the ladder which has resulted in a trip to face Hobart Hurricanes.
The Stars were ruthless having set the Sixers 169, bowling their opponents out for 74 in just 13.4 overs with skipper Glenn Maxwell leading the way for his side with the bat having scored a bruising 82 off just 43 balls.
Maxwell will again be key to his side’s fortunes in this sudden-death match-up with the Stars also relying on the likes of fellow match-winners Dwayne Bravo and Marcus Stoinis whilst they can also call upon Nick Larkin who is an injury replacement for Travis Dean.
Hobart Hurricanes will be looking to utilise their home advantage to progress to the final of BBL08. They finished top of the ladder by four points and were the best team throughout the competition but that will mean nothing if they cannot defeat Melbourne Stars in this semi-final. The Stars have some outstanding talent within their ranks with genuine match-winners capable of turning a game in the blink of an eye but the Hurricanes can edge this to make the final.
