GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS

Head Coach: Steve Kerr

Team Captain: Stephen Curry

Conference: Western

Division: Pacific

W-L: 33-8

  • The Golden State Warriors are one of the hottest teams in the league right now. They are currently riding a five-game winning streak, and own the best record in the NBA since they sit 25 games over .500. They have done this even though both Steph Curry and Kevin Durant have missed time during the season.
  • Durant has missed the past three games due to injury, but he is reportedly set to return ahead of this game. The talented small forward averages 25.9 points, 7.1 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and a 24.7 PER in 33 games this season.
  • The advanced stats love Golden State. The team ranks first in several offensive categories such as points per game (116.0), field-goal percentage (.508) and three-point field-goal percentage (.390), while ranking second in points per possession with 1.15. As if that was not enough, they are also one of the top defensive teams in the league, allowing a mere .434 from the field (second-best mark in the NBA) and 106.1 PPG (16th).

LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS

Head Coach: Doc Rivers

Team Captain: Blake Griffin

Conference: Western

Division: Pacific

W-L: 18-21

  • The Clippers have been struggling a bit of late. Even though they have four wins in their last six games, they are still three games below .500 and are coming off a tight win against the lowly Atlanta Hawks. They squeezed a win there, but they need to improve if they are to compete against the Warriors.
  • As if their recent results were not enough, Los Angeles are also quite shorthanded when it comes to injuries. Danilo Gallinari, Milos Teodosic, Austin Rivers and Patrick Beverley are all out, meaning the roster is quite depleted when it comes to ball handlers and point guards. Lou Williams (22.2 points per game off the bench) and Blake Griffin (22.8 PPG) have been playing quite well, but Los Angeles need to get healthy – and quickly – if they want to have a shot at a playoff spot in a tightly-contested Western Conference.
  • Advanced stats have not been kind to the Clippers, either. They rank outside of the top 10 in several stats such as points per possession (1.08, 12th), points per game (106.1, 13th), and field-goal percentage (.455, 15th), and they also rank just 25th in assists per game with 20.9. That last statistic can largely be attributed to the number of injuries they have suffered at the point guard position, though.

PREDICTION
The Warriors should be considered strong favourites ahead of this game, especially considering Kevin Durant is slated to return. Steph Curry is playing like a true MVP candidate since he averages 36.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.8 assists over his last four games, and the Clippers will be a touch shorthanded due to injuries.

The Warriors also have the top scoring offense in the league since they average 116 points per game, while the Clippers rank 20th in points allowed with 106.7 per contest. Expect the Warriors to cruise their way to a relatively easy win.
